Chocolate Chip Bagels

Once upon a time you could find chocolate chip bagels everywhere, they even sold them at Costco. Slowly though, these delicious bagels began to drop off the earth (to my utter disappointment). I have been sulking about their demise for quite some time and then I finally thought I would do something about it. One Sunday afternoon me and my friend set out to make our OWN Chocolate Chip Bagels.

Whilst making these bagels I found out why they may not be as prominent anymore…it turns out they are a bit annoying to make because as we found out, chocolate melts when it’s heated. You might be saying duh! But honestly we didn’t think that it would be a problem until we got to our broiling and boiling steps (see below). Our bagel water turned a lovely shade of brown as bits of chocolate kept falling out of our bagels and melting into the water. I don’t know how we could prevent this but I think we did have enough chocolate in our bagels so don’t worry if your water looks like ours:

Despite this we percerviered and turned out some delicious bagels. We used mostly whole wheat flour to up the health content (we are dietitians of course!).

Chocolate Chip Bagels
(Adapted from for Cinnamon Raisin Bagels)


2.5 Cups       Whole Wheat flour
1 Cup             All Purpose Flour
1.5 tsp           Salt
1.25 Cups    Warm Water
1 Tbsp           Honey
1.5 tsp          Yeast
1/2 Cup        Chocolate Chips (might want to use more as we lost a bunch through the boiling step)


1. In a small bowl combine the honey, yeast and warm water and let sit for ~5min or until yeast starts to froth

2. In a large bowl sift 2 cups of whole wheat flour and the salt, add the yeast and stir well until everything is mixed. Add All purpose flour 1/2 cup at a time and then the rest of the whole wheat flour a bit at a time until you can’t stir it anymore by hand.

3. Turn dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead for ~8min

4. Flatten the dough a bit and add the chocolate chips, continue to knead to evenly distribute the chocolate chips. (Some will fall out but just push them back in)

5. Form into a ball and place into lightly greased bowl. Lightly greas the top of the dough and cover with a tea towel. Let rise for ~45min (Dough should double in size).

6. Punch the dough down and roll into a log. Cut into 10 pieces (or more if you want smaller bagesl). Form the dough into balls and pinch a hole in each ball making rings (like bagels). Make sure you make big holes because otherwise you might lose the wholes through the rest of the rising/baking steps

7. Place bagel rings onto a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper and sprinkled with cornmeal. Cover with a tea towl and let rise another 45min (should double again)

8. Preheat broiler, broil bagels for 1 min per side.

9. Preheat oven to 375F and put a large pot of water to boil.

10. Once water comes to a rolling boil, boil bagels for 1min per-side. Drain bagels over a cooling rack.

11. Bake for 30min or until golden brown (you may also choose to sprinkle bagels with a bit of sugar before baking).

12. Enjoy with your favourite spread I like cream cheese and peanut butter and banana.
